As the weather changes, most likely you’re turning your attention to the exterior of your home.  Sprucing up the yard, porch or deck are often times where people begin. Though, for the ultimate curb appeal, a fresh exterior coat of paint with not only make your home look its best but also protects and increases the value of your home as well.

Throughout this article we will be discussing how to decide on the correct shade, color and hue of the exterior of your home, based off of its architecture and building material.  Generally speaking you won’t want to more than three colors when painting your home, and painting a home with exposed brick should require only two colors.  If you want to accent doors and windows this is where we would use the third color, but less is more.  Though if you wish to stray beyond this general rule of thumb, try playing bait with the color of your front door.  As this can have a huge impact on the overall look of your home, yet can easily be changed if you decide to go with a different look.

The first factor in choosing the perfect color for your home is the architecture of your house, obviously if your home is a victorian or colonial styled house, you won’t be looking at the same color pallet as would some one with a Spanish style or modern minimalist styled home.  You also want to consider fixed elements such as the color of your roof, or brick that make up the exterior of your home.

Moving forward you will want to take a step back and look at the colors of your neighbors homes, you wont want to pick a color that is too similar or too closely matched to your neighbors home put may want to stay within the same shades, weather it be darker or lighter shades.

The climate and landscape surrounding your home is also something worth considering when painting, as lighter colors work better hotter climates, due to the fact they absorb less heat, resulting in lower energy costs.  If you live in a heavily wooded area you might want to consider more earthy tone rather than bright flash colors.  You want your home to be a reflection of the environment where it resides.

The size of your home can also help you choose the perfect color, lighter colors makes properties look bigger while darker colors will make homes look smaller.  If you have a section of your home that may be out of proportion with the rest of your house, try painting it darker than the rest of your home.  However if you have a smaller home with only one or two main features, you’ll want to stick with lighter colors as this makes your home appear larger than actually is.

If you’re looking to stray beyond the norm, and want to pick a quirky colors make sure you see exactly how they look in the sun light, as this can significantly change how your home’s exterior turns out.  For colors such as blue and green, make sure they have a hint of grey in them as rather than a pure green or blue.  If you’re going with warmer colors such as red or orange.  Be sure they have a touch of brown so they aren’t so strong and vibrant.
